Small, smelly white stones in your mouth?
Here’s what they really are
Those are usually tonsil stones — also called Tonsillolith.
They’re small clumps of:
- food particles
- dead cells
- mucus
- bacteria
that get trapped in the crevices of your tonsils and harden over time.
Common signs:
- bad breath
- a weird taste in your mouth
- sore throat
- feeling like something is stuck
- small white or yellow “stones”
They’re usually harmless, but they can smell terrible because bacteria produce sulfur compounds.
Things that may help:
- gargling warm salt water
- good tongue + dental hygiene
- staying hydrated
- gently flushing them out with a water irrigator on low pressure
Avoid digging them out aggressively with sharp objects — that can injure your tonsils.
If they keep coming back, get painful, or cause swelling/trouble swallowing, it’s worth seeing an ENT doctor.
